Reserve Bank of India puts BRICS CBDC Bridge on the summit agenda

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has proposed considering a BRICS CBDC Bridge at the 2026 BRICS summit. The idea — to connect the central-bank digital currencies of all BRICS+ members to simplify international trade and tourism settlement.

mBridge surpasses USD 55 bn

The multilateral CBDC project mBridge processed more than 4,000 cross-border transactions totalling around USD 55.5 bn. About 95% of the volume was the digital yuan. The largest CBDC-settlement case to date and a parallel foundation for the future BRICS Pay ecosystem.

Lavrov: BRICS Pay pilot launch — end of 2026

At the 17th BRICS summit in Rio, Russian FM Sergey Lavrov confirmed that the BRICS Pay pilot launch is targeted for end of 2026. The priority of CBDC integration and national-currency settlement was reaffirmed.

mBridge reaches MVP, BIS exits the project

The multilateral CBDC bridge mBridge reached the minimum viable product (MVP) stage. The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) withdrew from governance; the project moved under the control of five central banks (China, Hong Kong, Thailand, UAE, Saudi Arabia).

China formally endorses BRICS Pay

Against the backdrop of the Kazan summit, Beijing officially announced full support for the Russian initiative for a unified BRICS payment system. This removes one of the main barriers — lack of consent from the bloc’s largest economy.

The 16th BRICS summit took place in Kazan. The Kazan Declaration was adopted, fixing the course for an independent settlement system in national currencies. Physical demo BRICS Pay cards with a QR on the back and a 500 RUB balance were shown to participants of the Business Forum.
